Revelation 3:14 And to the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write, ‘These things says the Amen, the Faithful and True Witness, the Beginning of the creation of God: I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other!
Whenever a person puts ice cubes in a drink, there is only one expectation – that the drink will become cold. It will be an anomaly for drinks to turn boiling hot after ice cubes are put in them. We could conclude ‘they are consistent in staying cold’
The charge against the church in Laodicea was this ‘you are neither hot nor cold’. That was God saying ‘I don’t know which version of you will show up on any given day. I am actually wondering how much I can do with you seeing as you are so inconsistent.’
There are some people whose responses to certain questions and circumstances you can predict with 100% accuracy because they are consistent. They are consistent with their choices, their motivations, their drive and their actions. You can tell which version of them will show up. In building trust, such consistency is critical because one needs to have some kind of certainty and predictability when they Trust.
Just as we can trust the integrity of God to do what He says He will, He also vets us to see if He can trust us to stay consistent to our commitments and consecration. Make up your mind therefore: whether to be hot or to be cold, not lukewarm; for in that case, God will spit you out of His mouth .
