FOUNDATIONAL ATTRIBUTES

Ephesians 4:1-3 I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

From our text today, we get a template that guarantees a walk worthy of the vocations for which we have been called. Humility and gentleness form the first layer, long-suffering forms the next and forbearance builds on these with the aim to attain singleness of heart.

Humility or lowliness, and forbearing sit at the heart of this discourse. God resists (opposes) the proud but gives grace to the humble. You may get away with everything else being against you because it is written ‘if God be for us, who can be against us’. However, if God himself opposes you, where do you stand? The only proportion that directly equates with humility therefore is this ‘humble yourself before the Lord and He will lift you up’.

Forbearing is akin to anticipating a wrong and making the decision to let go even though it might be well within your rights to do otherwise. That intentional choice is an acknowledgement of the humanity of others: the fact that we will not always get it right. Therefore, there has to be room to accommodate those human moments.

These are foundational list of key attributes that should define the walk of one who has come to the knowledge of their calling.
