There is a reason everything is governed by a specific sets of rules. A goal in soccer is allowed to stand only when specific criteria are met, on a chess board pieces can only move in a set pattern and direction and a centimetre is always equivalent to 10 millimetres. These things are set in an objective space. There is no wiggle room because if everything was left for interpretation, then things would be unfair.
Yet, this is the very situation the scene in today’s text appears to address:
"Every way of man is right in his own eyes, but the Lord weighs the hearts."(Proverbs 21:2)
All of us, therefore, can successfully define our very own unique set of life’s guidelines, as we deem right in our own eyes. But we are told “the Lord weighs the heart”. If we probe a bit further, we would bump into the question “if hearts are being weighed, against what are they being compared?”
Beloved, let us there is a set standard against which things are measured because surely, we all cannot be right all the time, that is not human. You should therefore not become a god unto yourself where in your eyes, you can put no foot wrong and cannot be corrected or rebuked. Do not become your own standard, lest you end up missing the true standard completely.
