Luke 5:2 And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets.
When any Fisherman casts a net, the only thing they had control over from the very start is the size of fish they catch because of the size of mesh in their fishing net. They however have no control over the type of fish they catch. In fact, many things other than fish gets caught in the net.
It should therefore not surprise us that after the disciples reported they had toiled all night and caught nothing(vs 5), they were still washing their nets. That would seem unnecessary unless some things other than fish had been caught.
When Jesus called Peter and his brother, he told them ‘follow me and I will make you fishers of men’. Whatever men then that would get caught in their nets did not matter, because all men need Jesus. For you and I, it is different, we do not need ‘all men’, we need ‘some men’.
So our question to think about is ‘what or who has your net caught? Have you caught habits and attitudes you didn’t intend to? Or have you realised you have caught men who should not be in your net? If so, we are reminded that our nets require washing.
