FOLLOWING THE AUTHOR OF LIFE
Matthew 8:19, 20 Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”
Those words which Jesus spoke to the scribe would cause reality to set in fairly quickly for anyone whose intentions were not clear as to what ‘I want to follow you’ actually meant. He tells the scribe in words which would hint at: “If you expected me to tell you something that would to make your following me worth your time, I got nothing for you just yet. Nonetheless, would you still follow me?
Thus, for any persons whose expectation were not met, they had the option to chart another course right from the very start.
Jesus was not going to tell them ‘following me will cost you nothing’ because it can seem very exciting to jump unto the ‘Jesus-train’ expecting a heap of all the benefits hidden in the Word of God to become our bread and butter immediately. Ideal as that seems, that walk, should we choose it; won’t always rosy.
In fact, it is often accompanied with significant testing challenges. Your decision to follow then, should be one that intends to embrace the rough paths, hills and valleys, as well as the rose laden parts of the journey. All the while trusting that you stay following Jesus, the author of life.
