John 15:11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.
Could I have a bigger house please. Anything else?
And a car to go with that.
Do you mind throwing a few more millions into the account?
Could I have an amazing family? A partner and children who love me?
Could I rise through the ranks in the office?
This conversation between anyone one us and God, who only asks ‘anything else’ is a reminder of how insatiable the needs and appetites of man is. Man makes the bold claim ‘when I get X, I will be happy and complete’! Yet when X arrives, there is reason to be dissatisfied because something that looks better than it has popped up on the horizon.
‘That my Joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete’. Jesus intervenes because if left to ourselves, we will never truly attain a state of joy but rather will continue to live our lives in perpetual pursuit of the things that will never satisfy.
