LOOK AHEAD
Isaiah 43:18 Do not remember the former things, Nor consider the things of old.
Today’s scripture employs the use of two action words ‘remember’ and ‘consider’. Although the instruction is to do neither, the latter is of interest in our discourse today.
Consider is used in more active terms to suggest ‘thinking carefully about or looking attentively at’. In effect, when one ‘considers’ something, a greater deal of brain power has to be dedicated to that activity.
Therefore, regarding the things of old, we are advised ‘not to consider them’. Whether victories or defeats, laughter or tears, disappointments or delights; surely, they played a role in getting us to where we are – yet we cannot keep going over old history.
Picture this: if you continue driving any forward moving vehicle with your focus attentively on just what is behind you, you might be in for a few surprises. You will miss the hazards ahead of you, you won’t see any directions and signs clearly and so will miss exits and turns. Ultimately, you are more likely to crash
God does not want us wallowing in what has been, because then we really will be unable to perceive what new things He is doing.
