DAY 308 OF 365 IN 2021

Luke 15:4 What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it?

If any other person had a hundred sheep, and lost one, their initial reaction would be ‘where is my sheep?’ Unless there was cover for them to go searching, it made very little practical sense to leave the entire herd behind to go searching. The shepherd who does so leaves them at the mercy of the weather, predators, and robbers. And that calculation is one that results in a loss. So the logic would seem ‘better the loss of one than more of the 99.

The idiom that seemed to tie in with today’s text was ‘don’t cry over spilt milk’. Once spilled, it is literally impossible to make milk usable, we can simply say ‘it becomes a lost cause’. But with God, there is no lost cause hence the image of a shepherd and his sheep is preferred to milk because the lost sheep can be found when sought.

We will most certainly be in disagreement with the choice of God to seek after the one, but that’s His way. We will not entirely understand why, but that is why He is the creator and we are his creatures. Every single one of His creation then, does have a special place in the heart of God, therefore none of them is a lost cause. And just in case you’re wondering, God does not simply ‘abandon’ the ninety-nine for He neither slumbers nor sleep. His watchful eyes are ever looking upon them.
