STILL, ASK!

DAY 168 OF 365 IN 2021

STILL, ASK!

Matthew 6:8 Don’t be like them, for your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask him!

There are some questions that will always prod some unusual glances and thoughts. Among them is one which stems out from the Gospel today: ‘if God knows what we already need, why does He wait for us to ask? Of course He can do them without us asking so why is our asking a necessity?

It is very interesting how He has programmed access to Him such that anyone who calls on Him, shall be saved, such that to all who call on Him in their time of need, He hears. Surely His arms are not too short to save nor his ears too dull to hear. Even while they are yet speaking, God hears and answers.

In the word of Saint Augustine ‘He who created us without our help will not save us without our consent.’ Thus, the place of asking lies in our acknowledgement of His assistance. It rests on the premise that although apart from Him, we can do nothing, without our Yes, there is only so much He is permitted to do in our lives. Beloved, in our relationship with God, it takes an acknowledgement of our position as workers together with him, a realisation that He is our father – from whom we can ask anything; knowing that He will only give to us out of his ‘goodness’

While asking, therefore, might seem strange to us; to God, it establishes that there is a place reserved for Him in our lives- a void only He can fill.
