Luke 14:18 And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused.
Each of us have what we treasure, the things we will trade off for another in the blink of an eye and those we will gladly hold on to even with a gun pointed to our head.
From our parable today, it appears the invitation to a feast was not reason enough to get the invited guests to abandon their check of a new land, trying out a new pair of oxen or spending time with their new marriage partner respectively. Each of these seem plausible reasons or would we say ‘excuses’ for staying away?
However, our invitation to the banquet of God, the opportunity to spend time in His presence is something we should be craving, not giving excuses to avoid. There is something about that presence which sets things right – physically, mentally and emotionally. Let us therefore strive to bask in the presence of God for it is the place to be.
