Luke 8:5 A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it.
“When you take a punt on something”, it means to take a chance and to accept the risks associated with that decision. We read the parable of the sower which has the opening preamble “a sower went out to sow”. That was the primary intention for going out and that was him taking a punt since he had no idea where the seeds he scattered would fall. As we later come to realise, some fell by the wayside, others on rocks and in thorns while some ultimately found good soil.
We will be unlikely to associate God as one who ‘makes bets’ but we can be certain of one thing, God has taken a punt on us. He very well knows that even if he gives us His all, meets us at the point of every need and remains at our beck and call, in the blink of an eye; we may still decide not to choose Him. In spite of the real potential of losing us, He takes a punt on us, hoping that the outcome will be favourable.
What at all does God see in us and are we really worth all the stress? Why would He go extra miles for our sake? Unfortunately, that is an answer for Him to answer but there is sufficient evidence all around us to suggest that He really would go as far as He can for us. No matter how far we drift or how low we fall, God is willing to take a punt on us. That ought to really encourage us to choose Him too.
