Reference text: James 1:1-11
James 1:6,7 But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord.
In some multiple choice exams usually related to healthcare, the system for marking is ‘plus one, minus one’. This simply equates to a gain of one mark for a right answer and a loss of a mark for an incorrect answer. Zero may also be awarded for not answering at all. And on many occasions, this seems a fair deal because lives are on the line and a pure guess isn’t appreciated, thus certainty is more the way to go.
That is the thought that came to mind as I read today’s text, the singular fact that any one who asks in doubt, should not expect to receive anything. So I was rather sad and wondered nothing at all? Not even a partial reception? Seriously, nothing? But yes, scripture is explicit- nothing!
This may appear as a plot to keep things away from us, but the real intent is to make us realise what can facilitate the reception of the things we ask for. Here is why: because we know what gets us nothing, we can place ourselves in a position that gets us everything – undivided loyalty and a single-minded commitment to God. That is where we want to be positioned.
