Reference text: Luke 6:27-38
Luke 6:27 This is what I say to all who will listen to me: Love your enemies, and be good to everyone who hates you.
Jesus spoke a lot of things in the chapter of Saint Luke’s Gospel in which today’s text is found. It was a ‘loaded’ message which seemed to have something for everyone, with content ranging from love for enemies to giving generously. However, He threw in a very crucial piece of information before revealing the mysteries He did: ‘this is addressed to all who will listen’.
Regardless of how impactful or packed a message might be, its effect can only be measured and felt when they reach the ears of an active and willing listener. Hence, the directing of the message towards those who were ready to listen.
We have the opportunity to hear tons of words each day both consciously and unconsciously. We are provided with the chance to be impacted or not, to be encouraged or not, to be comforted or not; dependent on whether we choose to listen or not.
So even though every message could be addressed to everyone, only a handful will be impacted- those who are willing to listen.
