Reference text: Matthew 5:13-19

Matthew 5:14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

Some locations are home to the world’s grandest chandeliers; the longest and arguably the most modern is referred to as ‘Reflective flow’. This is a 38.5 metre long chandelier containing approximately 55000 LED lights and weighing just under 20000kg. Like other chandeliers meant to be attention-grabbing pieces, it’s very intricate designs and delicate arrangements are a beauty to behold.

Many chandeliers are therefore ceiling-mounted because that position offers a good spot to gain attention and to ensure that its light reaches farther. For any person seeking to avoid attention then, a hilltop city sounds like a bad place to pitch camp. Rather, a lower ground location with adequate forest cover should suffice. However, just like a chandelier is likely to catch anyone’s attention, the same can be said of a city on a hill.

Although you may throw a tantrum and disagree because that isn’t what you want, my dear, you have already become a centre of attention. As the crowning of God’s creation, one made in his image and likeness, among all the attention grabbing chandeliers; you shine brightest. Your potential, your dreams, your goals will thus automatically draw attention from admirers as well as contentions from your opposers.

On account of the latter, many have turned off their lamps in order to attract no attention or contentions. While those who would admire you may miss out on the opportunity to do so because there is no point of attraction, opposition will keep contending because the potential to attract remains. This should rather spur us on to shine even brighter and reach further because that is what we have been made- ceiling mounted chandeliers and cities built on hill, there are eyes are already fixed on us. So as beckoned, we will only shine brighter to illuminate our world.
