Reference text: Hebrews 6:10-20
Hebrews 6:13 For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he sware by himself,
In the days of old, when there were no signatures or means of drawing up written contracts, the guarantee for promises lay in the words that were spoken. As such, the weight of whatever oath or promise a person spoke could be considered guaranteed, entrenched and upheld by law; if we transposed those days to our present time.
The letter to the Hebrews today takes us back to the book of Genesis, the scene where God required Abraham to offer Isaac up. There, God spoke:
- “By myself have I sworn—because you have gone through with this, and have not refused to give me your son, your dear, dear son, I’ll bless you—oh, how I’ll bless you! I will bless you with incredible blessings. And I’ll make sure that your children flourish—like stars in the sky! like sand on the beaches! And your descendants will defeat their enemies. All nations on Earth will find themselves blessed through your descendants because you obeyed me.”(Gen 22:16-18 MSG)
Interestingly, the one thing that stands out to me in the text today are the guaranteed promises enshrined in the words: ‘I WILL bless you- Oh, how I will bless you.’ I pictured God, our father, trying to create a dramatic effect just so we can began to fathom the depth of blessing he has promised to bring our way. And oh, one more thing my dear: unlike man, ‘God CANNOT forget’ so you can remain assured.
Remember # ‘by the time your walk on earth is done, God will have honoured every promise made to you’
