HEART-SERVICE ONLY, PLEASE!

Reference text: Ephesians 6:1-9,

Ephesians 6:6 Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart;

I recently watched a drama where a bank was informed of an unannounced inspection by their incoming branch manager who wished to experience the service on offer first-hand, as an anonymous customer. Armed with this information, acting team leaders instructed staff to be extra nice in dealing with all customers during the week scheduled for the inspection until the manager arrived.

This reminded me of those days in high school where inspections offered not to students, but ‘the rooms we slept in’, the opportunity to become ‘Cinderellas’, even if it was just for a few minutes. Inspections were thus, the main reason students would clean, scrub and dust their dormitories as closely as possible to spotless. However, this was done not because we really wanted to, but because we could not afford for our houses to rank last on the leader board- there was ‘an unwanted reward’ for placing bottom.

In effect, upcoming inspections can not only get students, but even workers to put their best foot forward because they will be under scrutiny. This should not appear strange to us since sometimes, we are also guilty of the very same thing. We appear to work harder when we know others are watching and put in a lot more effort if our actions will cause us to be applauded by others. However, when no eyes are are watching, we have no problem downing our tools.

My dear, service ought to be rendered not just because we are being watched, but because we want to offer it. If our motivation to speak right, act right and offer service right is evident only when we are put under surveillance, or when we are guaranteed some plaudits; then we still have some way to go.

Remember # the preferred method is heart-service, not eye service.
