A GOD WHO CHANGES NOT

Reference text: James 1:17-18,21-22,27

James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

To survive any environment, organisms utilise various adaptation techniques. Some undergo significant changes to their appearance in a bid to scare of predators. Therefore, to such living creatures who do not know what to expect from one day to the next, change is a constant variable in their lives. It is also a word that is very present and active in our human setting.

Yet, it does not apply to God. He falls outside the bracket of change, and as James writes ‘with him, there is no variableness nor shadow of turning’. He does not need to adapt to suit anything, He just remains God. This brings to mind a description of God I heard some years ago: ‘God is not in the universe, the universe is in God’. Now, that ought to give us an idea of the person we are dealing with.

In His own words, “For I am the LORD, I change not” (Malachi 3:6a), and that has been his trait from since time began. He has remained God, Almighty possessing all his glory and Majesty. He has remained Healer, provider, protector, counsellor and father. What ever He has been, He still is. He remains God, the I AM THAT I AM.

We may change to accommodate our variable settings, but God changes not. Let us therefore not associate any transitions and acute shifts with our God, as that is nothing like Him because
from age to age, if we are His people, He will be our God.

Remember # We serve an unchanging God.
