WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN GIVEN?

Reference text: Mark 6:17-29

Mark 6:22 And when the daughter of the said Herodias came in, and danced, and pleased Herod and them that sat with him, the king said unto the damsel, Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt, and I will give it thee.

The account in today’s Gospel is often overshadowed by the end game, which is the beheading of John the Baptist. However, there is a whole array of significant happenings and events for our consideration when reflecting: the daughter of Herodias sits in our spotlight today.

We can call her a girl who did not know what she wanted herself, or one incapable of discerning right from wrong owing to the speed with which she ran to her mother to seek her opinion. In addition, the absence of any questions as to the purpose of her mother’s proposal to request for the head of a man tells us a lot more about this girl. Either she was actually very ignorant, crafty or like her mother, ‘dangerous’.

However, even though we may not like her actions, the one thing we cannot take away from her is ‘she was a good dancer’. She may have had nothing else, but knowing that she could dance, was the single gift that opened the door to being promised as much as half of a ruler’s kingdom. I have no doubt Herod would have complied with any request she would have made seeing that his pride was very important to him.

Beloved, do you know what you can do well? What is it that you are gifted in? Each of us has something to offer, something we possess that can unlock access to places and people we would never have thought of. Is it your hands? Your feet? Your brain? Your sense of taste, sight or hearing? Or like some, your words or your voice? Find out, and whatever good thing it is that you know how to do well, keep doing it and keep polishing it. It is only a matter of time before it begins to work for you.
