Reference text: Matthew 22:1-14
Matthew 22:4 Again, he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them which are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come unto the marriage.
In advertisement, the use of verbose words and exaggerated adjectives are meant to gain the attention of listeners and viewers. So the statement: ‘we have a new car on sale in our store’, will not make as much impact as ‘visit our showroom to see the most dynamic, versatile and technologically advanced driving machine you can have access to with our new car’.
That was exactly what this father did when he sent forth his servants a second time to remind those invited to his son’s wedding. He gave them additional information presenting all that was on offer at the wedding: fattened oxen, good food and the key fact that ‘everything is ready’. However, even those words were not enough motivation to get his invited guests to attend. So would we say the father failed with his invitation or his guests were those of hard hearing?
‘Everything is ready’ actually meant so because others could fill the wedding hall and get the banquet started without much difficulty. Therefore, the question left to ponder on is ‘how serious have we taken the invitation of God?’ We may not have been invited to a wedding banquet, but invited to step away from an old way of living, or to embrace a deeper fellowship with Him. Interestingly, God has done all the background work for us and He is saying’ All is ready, all you have to do is come’.
Unfortunately, like the guests in today’s gospel, in spite of the words God has thrown to us in his invitation, we also seem to have other priorities that rank far ahead of our desires to respond to any such invitations from Him. My dear, even though God will keep trying to get us to accept his invitation, we can be certain that this will not be forever. So sweetheart, make up your mind about His invitation because time does not wait for anyone.
Remember # you can say Yes to God right now because ‘Everything is ready‘
