BELIEVE WHAT YOU SAY

Mark 11:23 For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.

The words ‘talk is cheap’ could not be more ideal for use than tonight. From the text, we see the use of four sequential yet distinct words so loaded with meaning: “say, no doubt, believe, receive”. Particularly of prime emphasis is the order in which the words are used in the text- an order which when reversed, defeats the purpose of the message.

Having served as a knight of the altar for about half a decade, I fell in love with the prayer before Mass which I still remember off head ‘go before us Oh Lord in this our sacrifice of prayer and praise; and grant that what we SAY and SING with our lips, we may BELIEVE in our hearts and that what we believe in our hearts, we may practice and show forth in our daily lives”. That for me was a way of living and perfectly paints a picture of what the words of Jesus in today’s text actually mean: saying without believing amounts to nothing.

As always, Jesus makes things sound really cool and easy to do but as humans, we struggle to know exactly what to do after ‘saying’ or requesting something from the Lord. The period between ‘saying’ and ‘receiving’ is one of the most important times in the life of the believer because it is what happens between these two end points that determines the eventual outcome of the request.

Paul’s words shed some more light on the value of this principle in his letter to the Romans 10:9 with the use of similar statements “if you shall confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you shall be saved”. Anyone can just say anything but it takes a person of faith to have a firm belief in what has been said as well as expect an answer to their prayer requests. Confession alone is not enough, it must come with the absence of doubt and a BELIEVING heart- only then can one be certain of a response.

Remember # talk is cheap, you must believe what you say in your heart.
