ACTIONS WITHOUT FOCUS

John 21:3 Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We are going with you also.” They went out and immediately got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing.

How random and odd would it have been that a band of Apostles would suddenly arise and say “let’s go fishing”. For men who had spent the last three years of their life with Jesus after leaving all else behind, including their fishing nets and boats, this action of theirs communicated something more because all their hopes had come crushing down when Jesus was crucified.

In their disillusionment, they jumped into a boat. As scripture describes, they caught nothing all night. Should we be surprised by this? Probably not! Of course we can highlight divine coincidences, but looking back at preceding events, it was clear that their minds were very far from fishing. The only reason they may have chosen that activity is because it was the closest to their default position.

In plain terms, despite their extensive portfolio of fishing experience, on that particular fishing adventure, they lacked the focus required to catch anything. Their minds were so far from their fishing activity that the outcome of their toil all night was a catch of zero.

There are some activities which simply cannot be completed without absolute focus. Even the slightest interruption in focus has significant a impact on outcome. In that regard, mundane actions without the accompanied level of focus will yield no results.
