Jesus’ words to the disciples today is another interesting one and is beautifully captured in
Luke 24:38 "And He said, “Why are you troubled, and why are doubts rising in your hearts?
Boiling begins from the base of the pan until it reaches the top, then it may overflow when the heart gets extreme. Doubts in this context can be traded off for alternatives such as “considerations, debates, or discussions” and their origin is “the heart” comprising the soulical faculties of emotions, will and intellect. That is where contemplations happen.
The reason Jesus flags doubts and attempts to curtail their upward rise is because of the goal they seek to accomplish. Anyone who begins consideration and debates often places a stated fact on the table. In many cases, it could be a promise or prophecy spoken by God. What such debates do is to juxtapose what God has said with our experiences and the word of others.
We begin to ponder on ‘has God said’. From the moment we begin to tap into realm of our experiences, defining the things we see within that same framework, we miss the yardstick completely.
Isaiah 26:3 reminds us that perfect peace is anchored in a steadfast mind, not shifting circumstances. The words of our moth and the medications of our hearts must both be acceptable to Him so let us be careful the what we allow into our heart because they bear inherent potential to strangle what God has said to and about us.
