Mary Magdalene on her first encounter with Jesus supposed him to be the gardener. So we realise the direction of her query in “
John 20:15b “Sir, if You have carried Him away, tell me where You have laid Him, and I will take Him away.”
However, after Jesus rightly addressed her by name, in John 20:16 She turned and said to Him, “Rabboni!” (which is to say, Teacher). Therefore, we see a transition in perspective from gardener to teacher, alongside instruction that came from “the teacher to the student”. It was not to be spoken from the mouth of a gardener to a weeping woman.
If we don’t discern the dimension of the people we engage with, we will miss out on other layers of encounter. That is especially true with God because at every level of engagement, there is something on offer and with every name of His, there is a revelation attached.
Just as you will not say everything to everyone, there are instructions, details and secrets reserved for those who do not see the gardener, but can discern the teacher. The reason is simple: some instruction are reserved only for students, not teary-eyed disciples.
