INSPIRATION BORN FROM REST

2 Samuel 7:1-2 Now it came to pass when the king was dwelling in his house, and the Lord had given him rest from all his enemies all around, that the king said to Nathan the prophet, “See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells inside tent curtains.”

No one would doubt that David and God had something going on. From their interactions through scripture, it was evident that God had a soft spot for him. David likewise had an affinity for the things of God – God’s house and his people. One would have thought that he would have come to the realization sooner that there was no temple for the ark.

However, it took a moment when ‘the Lord had given him rest from all his enemies all round’ that the thought of building a temple came to mind.

It wasn’t because David had backslidden or lost his relationship, it is simply because some inspirations don’t rise up until you have rest. David had been running away from Saul for many years, and on ascending the throne, he had been at war all through. Call it survival mode – a perpetual state of fight or flight.

The same applies to us – we often carry loads and competing priorities: work, finance, ministry, family, and many others that occupy the top rungs of our ladder. We are thus without rest. Some thoughts and inspirations therefore will not spring up because they only respond to rest. This is why we are invited to come and lay down the burdens we carry, and to receive rest.
