YOU ARE NOT THE ONLY PLAYER

John 5:7 Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.”

I have been teaching with Kahoots for the most part of the last 4 years. This is an online platform where competitive quizzes can be generated. When a quiz is running, beyond the correct answer, the one who answers fastest gets more points. Therefore, there is a window of opportunity within which an action has its maximum impact.

Thus, for the pool described in the Gospel, beyond the point of stirring, jumping into it at any other time only means you get in for a bath, not for healing. That is why individual actions must be tailored to align with intended impact. And in case you opt for the indifferent ‘I will wait for the next opportunity’, you have to realise that others are waiting to step in.

For this man, others had stepped ahead of him for 38 years. So think about it this way: ‘you aren’t the only one player’ – many others are patiently waiting for the same opportunity. Many are in their seasons of waiting: praying, growing and putting in the work need while waiting for time and chance. For this man, Jesus came as the opportunity in place of the stirring.

So as you also wait, keep your eyes open for the stirring of the water: the systems, the people, the situations that rise around you could be the opportunity you have waited for. Opportunity will not always scream  ‘here I am’, yours is to discern them when they arrive.
