Matthew 23:2 Therefore whatever they tell you to observe, that observe and do, but do not do according to their works; for they say, and do not do.
Do as I say, but not as I do. That instruction works for people who are of age and understand the language or medium through which such instruction is communicated. To those who don’t understand a language, that same instruction does not work so a reverse of “Do as I do, not as I say” appears more appropriate.
However, such a situation implies contrast: where a persons words and his works are heading in opposite directions. Simply put, it is ‘a living contradiction’. It is a risk to engage with anyone who cannot be counted on to honour their own words through action. It is the reason God has exalted his words above all-so that His works are consistent with His words without exception.
For us as believers, beyond the use of our words, our lives are also a medium through which the God we claim to preach with our lips is presented. In fact, on many occasions, how we live preaches a louder sermon than what we actually say. Therefore, our works cannot be contradictory to what our words say.
We cannot preach love and yet live a life filled with hate. We cannot preach forgiveness yet be swallowed up with bitterness and revenge. Our words and works ought to be in agreement with each confirming the other.
