When you read the first five books of the Bible, especially following the story of Israel after their departure from Egypt, one reads about a very strict and prescriptive set of actions required of them. By looking at it from a distance, one could get tired and overwhelmed by the number of requirements. However, it was necessary in their walk with God within that dispensation.
Today’s text highlights a similar point, albeit with a choice to make: “See, I have set before you today life and good, death and evil, in that I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in His ways, and to keep His commandments, His statutes, and His judgments, that you may live and multiply; and the Lord your God will bless you in the land which you go to possess.”Deuteronomy 30:15-16
The charge was to love God, follow his ways and keep His commands, statutes and judgements. While this may seem burdensome, an introduction to the book of Deuteronomy came to mind:
” the commands of God flow from His love, they are not chains, instead they are guard rails”.
They are safety mechanisms, call them spiritual and sometimes physical barriers along the road of life —designed to prevent accidents, unauthorized access, or harmful outcomes by establishing, enforcing, and monitoring predefined boundaries.
Without these external buffers, many will drive straight into a ditch or off a cliff on their journey through life. Beloved, God has little to gain by binding us down with laws. If for anything, from the very beginning, man was given the freedom to choose. His commands therefore are nothing but safeguards for us. That understanding is crucial.
