Sirach 15:15-17 If you choose, you can keep the commandments, and to act faithfully is a matter of your own choice. He has placed before you fire and water; stretch out your hand for whichever you choose. Before each person are life and death, and whichever one chooses will be given.
There are things that are well outside your control, things such as your parents, where you’re born and when, these can be described as choices that were made for you. However, beyond those major decisions, many others are yours to make. A quick search highlighted an interesting fact, that an adult makes an average of about 35000 decisions daily-including both automatic and consious or deliberate choices.
So much that it easy to say ‘you are the outcome of all the decisions you have made’. Such that, those choices you appear to actively pursue, and those that you are passive about, all contribute to the pool of decisions you make.
Taking this further, we come to the realization that even our indecisions are also choices. It’s interesting that the book of Ecclesiaticus makes a blanket statement “whichever one you choose, will be given to you”.
Hence, by some unusual sequence of events, we come to find out that everything around you often aligns in response to your decisions and indecisions – be it men, systems, resources, outcomes, and consequences. So waltzing along in life is not really an option because both your choices and indecisions come with prize tags assigned.
