Reference text: 1 Kings 11:4-13
1 Kings 11:6 So Solomon did evil in the eyes of the LORD; he did not follow the LORD completely, as David his father had done.
One thing God dislikes is lukewarmness, that feeling where we have one leg in and another one out, as if we are feeling things out. In Revelations, 3:15-16 we read “I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm – neither hot nor cold – I am about to spit you out of my mouth.
In today’s reading, we see Solomon attempting to share his loyalty between the gods of his wives and the God of his father. The only problem is “God almighty is a jealous God, and He does not share”. In every moment in time and at every opportunity, He is quite clear on the amount of loyalty required, and it has always been “ALL or FULL”.
Scripture is filled with verses like “choose this day whom you will serve”, and “love the lord your God with ALL your heart, mind, soul, strength”. The words characterizing Solomon’s dealings with God in this chapter are captured in verses 4 and 6: ‘his heart was not WHOLLY devoted to the Lord his God and ‘he did not follow the Lord COMPLETELY’. He was mixing.
Beloved, you cannot be here and there, in light and in darkness for the two have no association. You cannot be fervently Christian one moment, and unbeliving the next. You have to make up you mind. Lukewarmness may seem like a good option, a happy middle ground, but it is the one option that gets you thrown out fastest.
