THE VALUE OF YOUR LIGHT

Mark 4:21 Jesus continued, "Does anyone ever bring in a lamp and put it under a bowl or under the bed? Isn't it put on the lampstand?

We encounter a very interesting situation in today’s text. If we let our imagination run wild for a moment, we observe what appears to be Jesus seemingly confused about a situation. Paraphrasing the text, He appears to say “Am I the one who does not get it here? When anyone brings a lamp, they should place it on a stand right?”

We can also ask the same question in a different tone: “who brings a lamp and places it under their bed or basket?”From a common sense perspective, the obvious answer should be “No one”. But
actually, there is someone who can: ‘the individual who does not know the value and purpose of the light they carry’.

Without this awareness of the purpose of your light, where it is placed does not appear to really matter. The real questions then to ponder on are “what do I have? and “why do I have them?” Why do I have my gifts, my talent, my beauty, my access?

When we are charged to let our light so shine, there is an intention – “that all may see and give glory to God.” That is the primary reason why God let’s you shine ever bright – so be a signpost of him.
