Reference text: 1 Samuel 17:32-51
What is your objective heading into any battle? Nine and a half times out of ten, the end goal is to claim victory. In reality, that is really the primary aim of any one who enters into a fight. Yet, we see an alternative reality as far as this specific battle is concerned. David enters the fight with a very unusual end goal in mind, and this is reflected in every single statement he made. We can summarize this as:
“That God may be known”
While that may seem like a lofty reason, it really makes a strong argument for the case of God interfering or intervening in the affairs of man. What does He stand to gain? That has to be the underlying principle behind our requests for victory.
What does God gain from you excelling? What does God gain from you becoming wealthy? What does God gain from the abundance of wisdom flowing from your life?
Does he gain: a faithful servant? A matured believer? A voice to the nations? A conduit of His graces? A signpost of His power and might? A revealer of His names and possibilities?
Many a time, it’s not that hard for God to guarantee victory, it’s just that He sees too much of ourselves and nothing about his business in those pursuits. When David sought to set God as the only option and fly His banner, Goliath was delivered into his hands. So for you, it doesn’t really matter what your want because whatever it is, God is able to do. The real question is “what does He gain?” No spirit gives anything for nothing.
