HOW PROMPT IS YOUR RESPONSE

Reference text: Mark 1:14-20

Jesus found two sets of brothers at different stages of the fishing journey: the first pair: Simon and Andrew were casting their net, while James and John were mending their net. That stage did not matter because in both cases, the response was the same “immediately”.

If we recall the instructions Jesus gave to the disciples on the way to proclaim the Gospel: “don’t greet any one on the way (Luke 10:4),” and the charge ‘oh that today you will listen to his voice, harden not your heart (Ps 94:7-8). It is the same kind of urgency we are called to factor into our obedience.

We would wonder why, because the anthem we hear often is to take our time in executing some instructions. The reason an immediate response is required whenever obedience to God is highlighted is because we can very easily convince and rationalize ourselves out of it. You will be surprised at the multitude of ways you can justify your refusal to carry out an instruction.

Obedience to God comes through a very small window, and that window is so narrow that there are more opportunities to miss it than to yield to it. How prompt then is your response?
