IT’S NOT ABOUT YOU

Reference: John 3:22-30

When some well meaning disciples walked up to John and told him “that man who you announced to the whole world is doing the same things you are, and it appears he is drawing all the market”. John’s response was one that took advantage of the use of parables and is captured beautifully in today’s text: “At a wedding the groom is the one who gets married. The best man is glad just to be there and to hear the groom’s voice. That’s why I am so glad.” (John 3:29)

After this, we hear the very popular phrase “he must increase, but I must decrease(vs 30)”. Thus, instead of getting into battle for the place of the bridegroom, John was happy to stand as a best man and happily rejoice with the bridegroom. For him, there was no competition.

Beloved, here are some hard facts for your attention : You are not the centre of God’s programme, God should be at the centre of that programme. Your assignment is like the moon – reflecting the light that comes from the sun, but ensuring to acknowledge the sun as the source of the light you show.

So you cannot go around standing in the spotlight, boasting and showboating because it has never really been about you. If in and through your life, there is a an ongoing competition for relevance with Jesus, then you have really not understood the business of the kingdom. Most people enter oblivion when they attempt to become the main stars and upstage God in the script He, the almighty, wrote Himself.

It is and should always be “Jesus revealed, Jesus glorified” – be happy to always point others to him; that is how you stay lifted and relevant to the Kingdom of God.
