YOU MAY BE OUTRUN, BUT FINISH THE RACE

John 20:4 So they ran both together: and the other disciple did outrun Peter, and came first to the sepulchre.

I know it’s easy to say today’s Gospel passage described a shootout competition between age and youth because Peter’s delayed arrival coincided with the fact that he was older than his compatriot with whom he was running. That is true, but it does not eliminate the fact that ‘Peter was outrun’. However, another fact that was laid bare is that “Peter eventually arrived at the tomb”.

The reality in race of life is ‘even to the same destination, you may be outrun by others’ – that is the truth. Does that mean you stop running? No! Anyone who has driven on a high speed road like the Autobann in Germany will attest that regardless of how fast you drive, another vehicle will likely zoom past you. But, you keep on moving forward.

While speed can be an advantage in certain circumstances, you cannot spend the entirety of your life blocking the fast lane just so no one gets past you. Life does not function that way because while to the aged, experience is their advantage, to the swift, speed is their advantage. Beyond how fast you are moving however, the end goal is to arrive at the destination set from the start because only then can you say “I have finished my race”.
