Luke 1:20 And now you will be silent and not able to speak until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their appointed time.
Zechariah stood in the office of priest in the season when John was to be conceived. According to lots, it was his role to burn incense in the temple in his priestly duties. Often, we lean towards the conclusion that he was struck mute because he did not believe. But beyond this, I believe he was shut up because God knew the potential he, Zechariah, had to uproot what seeds he, God, had sowed.
His words, by virtue of the office he wielded as priest, had potential to misalign with what God wanted to do and so his silence in that instance, was the partnership God required to do what He had planned.
Sometimes, what you don’t say becomes your saving grace because words carry life and power. There are times when you are held back from your own words, especially in periods when you are angry or things are not going well. Even in those times of peak excitement. Those are the moments when you are vulnerable, and very likely to be careless with your words. You can literally destroy seeds that had been sowm or destroy what is being built.
Sometimes, confessing with your mouth is needed, but on occasions, your silence is sufficient partnership with God.
