Reference text: Matthew 1:1-17
Matthew 1:17: Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Messiah.
Anytime we read the genealogy of Jesus as captured in Matthew’s Gospel, on the surface all we see is a roll call of the generations from Abraham to Jesus. On that list, we see some familiar names as well as some unexpected ones. Some that will still raise eyebrows today.
But reading this text today, just one thing comes to mind “God knows how to preserve his treasure”. The lineage of the messiah was jealously guarded for 42 generations, and manifested in the time of Jesus. That takes power to achieve and that alone in itself, is testament to the ability of God.
You would have thought that on the basis of the wrong choices some names on the list made, this preservation would have been aborted at some point. But no, mercy moved, mercy spoke, then his power to preserve went to work. You know what, you can trust God to finish what He has started. What may pass is time, but the end goal remains unchanged – what He has said, that He will do, and what He has started, that He will accomplish.
