Daniel 2:32-34 The head of the statue was made of pure gold, its chest and arms of silver, its belly and thighs of bronze, its legs of iron, its feet partly of iron and partly of baked clay. While you were watching, a rock was cut out, but not by human hands. It struck the statue on its feet of iron and clay and smashed them.
After reading today’s text I asked a random question in my web browser “what is the most important part of a standing statue? This was the response “The most important part of a standing statue is the base and the legs/feet as they provide the crucial stability and support against gravity.”
As Daniel recounted king Nebuchadnezzar’dream, what we notice is a downward degradation in quality and cost of the metal used: from a head of gold, we see chest and arms of silver, middle and thighs of bronze, legs of iron and feet partly of iron and clay. For an image the size Daniel described, ensuring a firm base was imperative because that was the only way it will hold up it’s weight. Yet, the feet were its weakest parts.
So our question: are you so glam up top that you did not bother about the foundations? Were you so excited with the shiny head of gold that the clay feet did not matter? When that stone was flung the the statue, neither the clay nor iron feet holding it up stood any real chance.
Here then is the lesson: ‘
No matter how high you aim to build, ensure that you have a solid foundation to hold it up. If not, any edifice will come crushing down even with minimal force.
