YOU CANNOT LIVE FOR YOURSELF

There are three kinds of music lovers: those who listen to music because of the artist, those who listen because of the melody and those who listen because of the lyrics. Every one primarily belongs to one of the three although all three make some contribution.

I am in the second category so music to me is all about the words. One hymn that always draws my attention and leaves me singing well past the service is one written by St Alphonsus Ligouri “oh bread of heaven beneath this veil” – the words which captures me the most are the last two lines of the third stanza which says:

“I cannot live, unless to prove
Some love for such unmeasured love.”

Saint Paul puts it this way: ‘God planned for us to do good things and to live as he has always wanted us to live. This is why he sent Christ to make us what we are(Ephesians 2:10). Beloved, because we have received so much, choosing to live for ourselves, as an act our will, is an unreasonable decision. There is much more at stake than ourselves, of that you can be assured.
