Luke 14:28 For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it—
Let’s break today’s verse down into minibites
‘which of you intending’ – Alternatives to the word “Intending” is desiring or wanting, and that is an important starting point. Desire is an important fuel that provokes action because without it, actions are not sustainable. They may be initiated, but not continued.
‘to build a tower‘ – Subsequently, desire has to be steered towards a focal point. If not, energy will be dissipated in the wrong places and in the wrong directions. Unfocused desire leads to wastage of energy.
‘does not first sit down‘ – sitting down is akin to assuming a posture of relaxation. No one by default thinks standing up, the optimal or preferred posture is sitting, a posture of relaxation. One must first take time to assess and gather information. Speed matters, but life isn’t always about the fastest, it often comes down to the one with the more accurate information or knowledge, and that comes from sitting down.
‘Count the cost‘ – everything has a price tag, and everything comes at cost. So it’s important to check that one has sufficient balance to bear the cost because not every gain is actually a gain, some gains are losses in disguise. Beyond material resources, will it cost you relationships? Will it cost you time? Will it cost you peace and tranquility? You need to check what costs you can afford to have on your bill else it becomes too expensive.
‘has enough to finish it’ – the nature of God is to declare the end from the beginning. Therefore, completion should be in mind from the very start. You don’t enter with a midway exit plan. Your declaration from the start should be “I have finished the race”
