Psalms 24:3-4 Who shall ascend into the hill of the LORD? or who shall stand in his holy place? He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully.
The heart biologically, is an interesting organ with complex mechanism underlying it’s function. Any impact on it’s plumbing, electrics and pumping, often has a knock-on effect on the whole body. In fact, it is effectively the powerhouse of th body as it is the one organ determining whether one’s body is alive because as scripture says ‘the life of the body is in the blood’, and the heart pumps this round.
Beyond this mechanistic layer, however, lies the heart as the ‘womb of thoughts’. Proverbs 4:23 is rendered “carefully guard your heart with all diligence, for out of it are the issues of life”. This dimension of heart of man has no mind of its own, and neither does it have any defences. It is up to its owner to create systems to protect it. The first of which is to be quick to throw things out.
Not physically, but “casting down reasonings, and every high thing lifting itself up against the knowledge of God, and bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ”(2 Cor 10:5). Here is a revelation: you will become a slave to the wrong thoughts, even if they are opinions, if you brood over them long enough.
There is much to achieve with a ‘pure heart’, and much more to lose with an unguarded heart: you will miss out on graces, lose people and also lose things.
The state of your heart is much more precious than you might think.
