Reference text: Luke 6:12-19
Things like who your parents are, which part of the globe your are born in and the early years of your life, are largely outside your sphere of influence. In that regard, you are entirely dependent on the decisions and choices of others. However, if there is an area you have much control over as you mature, it is your associations.
In that, you have to consciously make your selection. Almost in the same way you hand pick individual fruits from a pile of similar looking ones. The disciples described in the Gospel had made the first move by choosing Jesus. So when He called, those who presented themselves were those who went up the mountain with him. It was from that pool He chose the twelve.
The company you keep, therefore, cannot simply happen to you, you should have a tight filter in place. Even when you are chosen by another, you have to also choose them. That company determines those who go up the mountain with you and you cannot leave that to chance. Not even the Word incarnate did, so why should you?
