Luke 13:7 And he said to the vinedresser, ‘Look, for three years now I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and I find none. Cut it down. Why should it use up the ground?’
Followers of National team football get into a frenzy whenever players a re named for tournaments. While some are household names, others raise eyebrows, especially when there seems to be a lack of clarity on the reason for their inclusion. For such, they are often required to “justify their inclusion” – show that they deserved to be selected.
The owner of the vineyard in the Gospel presents such a claim “the fig tree needs to justify its current state and position”. In fact, he was ready to wield the axe when he said ‘cut it down ‘because it was “using up the soil”. Other versions render that statement as
“Why should it deplete the soil”
“Why should such ground be actually wasted”
“It’s just taking up space in the garden”
In the very least, our existence is to know God, love Him and that through our lives, our fruit and results, others may know Him too. So if year on year, we have nothing to show, we become candidates against whom a case for removal could be considered.
This is true across multiple spheres: there are some whose absence is unnoticed, and their presence is not celebrated because they contribute little or nothing. Whether it is to the kingdom of God, their family, their community, or to their world. They take up ground physically, but have no fruits to show for the amount of resources that has gone into them.
Dr Myles Munroe once said “one key to long life is a life with purpose”. Whenever resources are spent on you, whether spiritual or physical, say graces or money, it is expected that a weight of responsibility moves you to work to profitting. Don’t just be take up space, have fruits to show.
