Whenever the question in today’s title arises, we can expect choices to be made. In Exodus 32:26 we read “Then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, Who is on the LORD’S side? come to me!”
St Paul’s opening remarks in today’s text reads: “
Demas, in love with this present world, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica (2 Tim 4:10).
It doesn’t take much to realise why this was the case because James 4:4 presents us the with. reason “You adulteresses [disloyal sinners—flirting with the world and breaking your vow to God]! Do you not know that being the world’s friend [that is, loving the things of the world] is being God’s enemy?
So whoever chooses to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.”In other words, one has to take a stand and pick a side, bearing in mind that there are both implications and consequences for that choice.
Unfortunately, you cannot have your feet in both camps – one foot in the world and one with God. Such are even worse, the lukewarm individuals who will be spat out. Whether that comprises people, resources or things, whatever side that you do not choose intentionally, you will have to abandon.
You have to choose your allies, knowing that that your choice of allies automates your enemies. However, while it may not be so obvious, over time, it will become clear that the one who picks any side that has the Lord has made the better choice. I hope you choose with that in mind.
