Luke 11: 53-54 And as he said these things to them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to urge him vehemently, and to solicit him to speak of many things; They wanted to trap him into saying something they could use against him.

After reading today’s text, the first statement that came to mind was “what is a question?” A quick search presented the following answer “a question is a sentence that seeks information”. One thing that follows on from here is the use of the answer, because information use is very much dependent on the giver, the recipient and the nature of information received.
In the audience Jesus found himself today, there was seemingly an exchange of questions and answers. However, the goal of questioning was not for the joy of gaining new learning, but to seek for words to use in entrapping. It was as though they were playing along with “by your words you shall be condemned” and were thus waiting for Jesus to trip up.
Beloved, the words out of your mouth, whether in response to questions asked or not, can indeed be used as evidence against you in the court of law’ so learn when to speak in season. And not only that, master the choice of words that are appropriate for a specific season. In plain terms, not the answer to every question is required for the purpose it is asked, so learn to guard your mouth.
