Luke 9:43-44 And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God. But while they wondered every one at all things which Jesus did, he said unto his disciples, Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men.
There are two groups of people that come to mind when vibrant social events are celebrated: those who are ‘the life of the party’ and others who ‘choke the life out of the party’. Looking at today’s Gospel, Jesus in this episode, fell into the latter category because while everyone was celebrating the amazing event moments earlier when a demon had been cast out, Jesus throws a bomb of strange words at the disciples.
I am not surprised that we are told they did not understand what he said. We therefore wonder why Jesus said what he said at that time and with the preamble “Let these words sink into your ears?”. As far we we know about the character of Jesus, he takes every opportunity to teach a lesson, so today should be no different. The timing was not accidental.
I believe it was to pull them off their high horses and remind them not to stay distracted for too long. They were invited to pay attention once again because in the blink of an eye, they were facing a circumstance different from the one they were in awe of.
Individuals sometimes have a tendency to dwell in the same place and on the same things for too long: celebrating old successes, past histories and wins or replaying past hurt, defeats and disappointment, as though that was all there is.
The past, whether beautiful or not, should only remain in the periphery of your vision. You cannot let the past, blackmail your present to ruin a beautiful future. Don’t stay in it for too long, it will drop your anchors.
