GETTING TO KNOW YOURSELF BETTER

Reference text: Luke 16:1-13

The premise underlying the actions of the steward who was at the centre of today’s parable was his concern about life after losing his job. The verse of interest is thus

Luke 16:3 "And the steward said to himself, ‘What shall I do, since my master is taking the stewardship away from me? I am not strong enough to dig; I am ashamed to beg."

One thing we realise is the almost unapologetic recognition by the steward “I am not strong enough to dig and I am ashamed to beg”. In other words, he had taken a close look at himself and noted down the areas in which he was advantaged and those where he was clearly disadvantaged. After highlighting these, he declares “Now I know what I will do! Then when my job is gone, I shall have friends who will welcome me in their homes (vs 4)

It often requires ” a personal stocktaking” to become conscious of what you have or do not – that includes resources, traits, connections, and abilities. Without that, ‘I know what to do’ becomes hard to say because you cannot tell where the gaps in your life are, to develop targeted responses to them.

You can indeed do all things through Christ who strengthens you, but you will have varying degrees of success in each of those things. For those things which you have been given an exalted horn in, you will know. However, the journey begins with an introspective look.
