Music or sounds in particular have a way of making entry into your subconscious often without your permission. Stay long enough in any space with a particular sound on repeat and you are likely to find yourself hming away at a song you may not have listened to intentionally. Sometimes, you are baffled about the origin of the sound with no recollection.
Thus, to ignore sounds one has become cognizant of requires a great intentionality. The description Jesus presented was an interesting one “They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to each other:
We played the pipe for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not cry.’(Luke 7:32)
Here is the catch: there are many pleasant melodies littered in our space. Yet, not all of them warrant our attention. We should not dance to the sound of every flute or shed tears to the words of every dirge. You could dance and cry yourself into oblivion. Some men know what strings to tug on to elicit a response from us. However melodious, let’s not always dance to their tune.
