St Paul in this letter to the Thessalonians addresses their readiness for the day of the he Lord. He admonished them that it will be worrying if that day catches they who are in light by surprise. However, he also gives a charge which is the focus of discussion today:
Therefore let us not sleep,as do others; but let us watch and be sober(1 Thess 5:6)
In plain words, because of what we know, we cannot do the same things that others do. By extension, we cannot say the same things, believe the same things or follow the same patterns. It becomes an imperative on us to alter the mapping of our lives along a template fitting of who God has called us to be.
It is often a challenge to stand out, and on many occasions it may feel like harder work. But, that is a call we must heed. We simply cannot blend in when we must be awake while others slumber. We cannot tow the same line while knowing what we know.
We are invited to stand ready, and that means daring to be different. It, however, takes a lot to be different, sometimes, it means standing alone.
