DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU’RE ASKING FOR?

Matthew 20:22a Jesus answered, “You don’t know what you’re asking

Today’s text captures the scene where the mother of Jose and John approaches Jesus to ask that her sons sit on his left and right in the kingdom.

Every now and again, like her, we make demands of men and of God without having truly thought of what requests we have made. The logistics, the requirements, the rudiments etc. It’s comparable to a two year old requesting for the keys to his father’s car. That statement ‘you don’t know what you’re asking’, answers them rather accurately.

Requests should therefore be made with understanding, and that includes general requests and those made in prayer. We are required to be furnished with some understanding of the promises of God, the nature of God, and the character of God. Otherwise, we may end up making requests that directly interfere with His will for us.

Without knowing what you are asking, you can end up asking for the keys to a door that leads into a prison. You want power, you want fame and a good name. You seek wealth, desire riches and influence, all those are good things consistent with God’s best for his children. But do you know what it means to be wealthy, rich, powerful and influential? Do you even know what you’re asking for? If not, take time to find out.
