SALTINESS: AN INTRINSIC TRAIT

Matthew 5:13 You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.

When clothing lose their colour, we can dye them back. When materials lose their lustre and shine, we can polish them back to glisten. But the question which poses a challenge is what we read today “if salt loses its saltiness, with what shall we make it salty again? While online search engines offer a firm “No” to this question as common salt is deemed a very stable chemical compound, they offer conditions such as impurities and dilution as having an impact on saltiness.

Salt has a unique task and flavour profile hence it’s use in three key roles as a purifier, preserver and an additive. Such is the intrinsic nature of its taste of that without it, it is deemed “of no value”. If then, as believers and human, our intrinsic nature to purify, preserve and flavour is lost, what remains is an aberration; a shell that is inconsistent with the original design.

This is a harsh truth, but a necessary one the moment we lose our ability as additives and preservatives, we really have lost something. We are thus invited to ponder on the question: “Do I still possess the intrinsic nature to purify, preserve and flavour, or am I losing it?
